You can best get to know a country if you visit it by car.You can reach Slovenia via one of the border crossings with Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia, or you can rent a car in one of our car rental agencies. Slovenia’s highways are good and clearly signposted, beside the roads you will find rest stops, inns with overnight accommodation, and motels.
Documents required for arrival by car Foreign drivers, those from the EU as well as those outside it, need valid car registration and insurance, for the vehicle being driven. We suggest that before they intend to travel, drivers from the EU also obtain a green card issued by their insurance company, as in the event of a car accident, it facilitates the procedure of data exchange. The green card is obligatory for drivers not from EU member countries.
Travel by motorhome The driver needs to have a licence of the applicable category for the vehicle being driven, all passengers have to sit in adequate seats during travel and wear seatbelts. Other documents required are the same as for personal passenger vehicles. For transport of additional cargo on the roof or at the rear of the vehicle, the requirements are the same as for personal passenger vehicles – cargo may extend past the extreme front of the vehicle up to a maximum of 1 m, and may extend up to a maximum length of 1.5 m at the rear at the vehicle, however the total length of the vehicle with cargo must not exceed 12 m. If the cargo at the rear of the vehicle extends more than 1 m behind the vehicle it must be marked with a square board, 25x25 cm, with oblique red/white stripes. Overnight stops are permitted at special rest areas for motorhomes, which you can find HERE, or in camp grounds. For a list of camp grounds click HERE .
Slovenia to Introduce Vignettes (Toll Stickers)
Since 1 July 2008, motorcycles, cars and vans with a maximum permitted laden weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes are required to display a vignette (toll sticker) in order to use motorways and express roads in the Republic of Slovenia and the Ljubljana bypass.
As of 1 July 2009 the six-month vignette remains in use for motorcycles but not for cars and vans.
Annual vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg
EUR 95.00
Monthly vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg
EUR 30.00
Weekly vignette for motor vehicles up to a maximum permitted weight of 3,500 kg
EUR 15.00

EUR 47.50
Six-month vignette for motorcycles
EUR 25.00
Weekly vignette for motorcycles
EUR 7.50
Vignettes can be purchased at petrol stations in Slovenia and neighbouring countries, at offices of the national motoring organisation and foreign motoring organisations, at post offices in Slovenia and at some news kiosks. For more information consult the list of points of sale.
Using a toll road without a valid vignette (i.e. without paying the toll) is punishable by a fine of between 300 and 800 euros.
The annual vignette for the current year is valid from 1 December of the preceding year to 31 January of the following year (a total of 14 months). The six-month vignette is valid for six months from the date of purchase or to the last day of the sixth month if the sixth month does not have that day. The monthly vignette is valid from the moment of purchase to the same date of the following month or the last day of the month if the following month does not have that day. The weekly vignette is valid for seven consecutive calendar days beginning on the day chosen by the user on purchasing the vignette.
* An 09/6 vignette punched on 1 July 2009 or a later starting date will be valid as a monthly vignette. Car/van owners holding a six-month vignette purchased before 1 July 2009 may continue to use it until it expires.
Lorries, buses and other vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes will continue to use conventional toll payment methods (cash, debit/credit cards and the DARS Transporter card) in the furthest right-hand lanes of toll stations until August 2009, when a satellite-based electronic tolling system is due to be introduced for them.
