Štanjel, Garden by the Villa Ferrari

++386 (0)5 769 00 56
The garden by the Villa Ferrari in Štanjel is the original work of the famous Slovenian architect Maks Fabiani. He helped the owner, his brother-in-law, Dr. E. Ferrari, to arrange it. They designed the garden between the two wars and were in the process of completing it all the way up to the tragic destruction of the village in the autumn of 1944. The garden scheme is comprised of several parts that are ranked in terraces below the house and are a combination of outbuilding and decorative, useful and representational elements. The garden is arranged eclectically, as it imitates different style periods. Its essential part is the exceptional water system, which takes care of the watering, fountains and the water pool. The water is gathered in the village by a system of reservoirs and flows to the garden, except for that which is used by the local people for watering.

The first terrace with its pergola is the closest to the house, which has a glazed loggia. The pillars are built alternatively from stone and concrete, and are covered by the growth of a vine.  Along the slope is a string of wider and narrower terraces, connected with staircases and paths. A long sand path has been overgrown with cherry trees. On the middle terrace the flowerbeds of the floral-vegetable garden are designed in rectangular fields, finished off with a stone border. On the lower terrace, a rounded water pool with a fountain, grotto and a small island with a little bridge with a balustrade railing leading to it is designed after the Renaissance model. The terrace is concluded with a concrete balustrade fence and a viewing pavilion with an icehouse, passages to the lower part of the garden and a path towards Kobdilj and the Church of St. Gregory. One of the paths from the garden runs around the whole settlement and joins up with the portal at the curve in the village road below the castle.

The garden is in public use, but the locals do not give enough attention and care to its maintenance. It is part of the Fabiani trail.
