Old castle, Vipava

The ruins of the castle, Stari grad, are situated on a steep hill above Vipava, which is part of the Nanos plateau. Already in prehistoric times there was a settlement here. The castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century. A high defence wall on the north and the remains of the three-storeyed south residential area prove its Roman origin. The castle was first indirectly mentioned in 1154, when a Bogen aristocrat Wulfing de Wippach named himself after it. After that, the castle frequently changed owners. Between 1342 and 1342 it was owned by the house of Habsburg. In the first half of the 15th century, walls were built around the castle, which were circular at the north side and probably had a defence moat. After the Turkish invasion in 1478, the castle complex was encircled by the Renaissance walls with circular towers, whereas the old castle walls were modernized with small roundels. In 1487, the emperor Frederic III enfeoffed Vipava's castle to baron Leonhard von Herberstein. In 1528, it went into the hands of the counts of Lanthieri and stayed in their possession until the end of the Second World War.
