beside a river; in the countryside
The village of Lancovo welcomes you with the ruins of
Lipnica Castle,
Grabnarica Waterside Nature Trail,
Jelovica Plateau mountain pastures, and the green nature of the westernmost part of the uplands. What's more, the source of the Lipnica Stream is located here, which lends its name to the Lipnica Valley. The area is best discovered on horseback or by bike.
The medieval
Church of St Lambert, the patron saint of the Ortenburgs, can be found in Lancovo, while the ruins of their castle can be visited in the village of Zgornja Lipnica.
The castle used to be referred to as Waldenburg (Waldenberg Castle) due to the dark forests that envelope it. Following the 1511 earthquake, which reduced the castle to ruins, the locals renamed it
Pusti grad (Deserted Castle).
When at the top of the ruins, beautiful views of the valley and the Julian Alps open up to the visitor, while in the western part of the ruins you will find an energy point with vistas of Mt. Triglav.
Lipnica Castle Natural Science Trail leads to the castle from the town of Radovljica, while the starting point for a short ascent to the ruins can be found in front of the market in Lancovo.
The village of Spodnja Lipnica serves as an excellent starting point for ascents by bike to the Jelovica Plateau. During the summer season, an extensive network of gravel roads on the Jelovica Plateau facilitates excellent mountain biking; however, a sound knowledge of the area is crucial for safe recreation.
