beside a river; in the countryside
The character of an old iron-forging village has been preserved in the centre of Kamna Gorica, with a network of water canals and little bridges, earning it the name Little Venice
. Today, the village features a restaurant that serves excellent trout.
The village of Kamna Gorica lies in the Lipnica Valley
. From the village, walking trails lead to the town of Radovljica and to Lipnica Castle
(Lipnica Castle Natural Science Trail), while Kamna Gorica can also be reached by bike on your explorations of the Lipnica Valley.
The main road leads you through the new part of the village, bypassing the old part, but this is also well worth a visit. A foundry with a smelting furnace once stood next to a mighty linden tree. A memorial representation of the foundry, dedicated to the victims of World War II, has been erected in its stead. Not far away, wooden gutters, along which water flows across the Lipnica Stream, can be found, which are a distinguishing feature of Kamna Gorica.
The iron-forging tradition has been preserved with characteristic architecture and customs. Floating candles are placed in the stream that flows through the village on the eve of St Gregory's Day, mortars are fired for all important celebrations, traditional Christmas carols are sung in the village before the New Year, and, on 15 August, religious songs are sung in front of the village shrines.
A local celebration takes place on the first weekend of September, when Langus' Days are organised in remembrance of their fellow villager, painter Matevž Langus.
In winter, the ice curtain that hangs from the gutters is particularly magical, while recreational activities are made possible by a small ski slope and a network of cross-country skiing tracks.
