This nucleated settlement lies between the Savinja railway in the north (Celje-Velenje) and the Podvinska Struga stream in the south. The settlement is known for a number of features of interest such as the source of the Lava stream and a fish pond covering an area of 13.5 hectares which was badly affected by a flood in 1990.

The geological structure of the ground (limestone, marl and clay) has led to the formation of a number of springs right in the middle of the plain. The life of the people of Vrbje has long been connected with water, springs, sawmills, mills, farming and fish farming. The man-made Vrbje fish pond represents a significant part of this and its large water surface is of both environmental and economic importance.

The pond was formed in an area previously occupied by gravel pits and illegal rubbish dumps and now represents one of the last wetland areas in this part of Slovenia. It is an important habitat for a number of species and its lush vegetation make it popular with nature lovers.

The local administrative community of Vrbje covers an area of just over 2.5 square kilometres and has a population of 586. Clubs and societies: cultural – DK Vrbje; sports – Vrbje Sports Club; tourism – Vrbje Tourism Association; fire brigade –  PGD Vrbje; other – DU Vrbje, Mladi Mrhar Vrbje, Savinjska Dolina Auto-Moto Club Vrbje.
