Veliki Trn is the central settlement of a local administrative community numbering around 700 inhabitants. The names of some of the present-day settlements can be found in as early as the 14th and 15th centuries (1323 Kočno, 1353 Dole, 1354 Lomno and Ženje, 1436 Nemška Vas and Veliki Trn, etc.). After the Second World War, from 1952 to 1961, Veliki Trn was also the seat of a municipality. The following parish priests lived in Veliki Trn until their death: Modest Schrey (died 1821), Enlightenment thinker and translator; Anton Žakelj (who used the pseudonym Rodoljub Ledinski; died 1869), poet and collector of folk songs; Ivan Belec (died 1889), sociologist.
