The Istrian village of Gračišče is located between the hills Griža and Lačna. The layout of the old part of the village is clustered in character, with the houses very close together. Leading from the village is a mountain path to the Lačna (‘Hungry’) hill. The hill got its name after the cattle that grazed there and always came home hungry. On top of the hill, there is a panoramic tower. The path continues from the top towards Hrastovlje, Slavnik, Kuk, etc.
On the way through the village, one can visit the St. Nicholas’s Church and its adjacent bell tower with the inscription in the Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets, saying “I call the living, I mourn the dead”. It is a considerable curiosity in Istria. The village also boasts two portals that were built together with the bell tower in the 18th century, a balcony, a fountain with a water spring and the famous Karst caves Lisičji grad and Pečina. The village is known for its traditional Asparagus Festival (Praznik šparinge) and the rekindling of the old custom of the last grass cutting of the year (festival Praznik otave).
