According to oral tradition, the origins of the village date back to medieval times, when the area was property of the Lantieri counts from the nearby Rihemberk castle. It is situated on the edge of a large Karst valley, at the slope of hills Martinca, Škratljevica and Brda. Lukovec is a popular sight for hiking and cycling thanks to its magnificent view and unspoiled nature. An abandoned quarry stands in the vicinity, also known as “java”,whereas in front of the village is a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God, which was built by the Marc family (as they did not have any descendants, they welcomed the newly weds Turk) to show their gratitude for continuing the family tree.
