The first inhabitants of Pliskovica were shepherds. They observed the white sheep waging (pliska) its tail in a frisky way and named all their sheep Pliske, indicating their playful spirit. This also gave origin to the village’s name. It was called Pliskovica della Madonna for a while, after an occasion in which the Mother of God presumably appeared to three young girls. The oldest houses are situated in the part called Rena. The stone houses later expanded to the other two hills. The village is now divided into four areas and joined by fields and vineyards. Wine growing, wine trade
and handicrafts are well-developed activities. South from the village, the border with Italy runs along the Volnik hill and underneath it is the Mlačna pond. A majestic 400 year-old linden tree boasts in front the church of St Thomas. Standing in front of the tree, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the village and the Karst of Komen.
The village has been enlivened again thanks to the RD Pliskovica and the MHP (Youth hostel Pliskovica), who organize several events and activities throughout the year.
Automobiles : In Dutovlje turn left from the Sežana-Nova Gorica road, go straight forward to Pliskovica.
