Kamnik is situated on the Bistrica plain, which is an integral part of the Ljubljana Basin, between the regions of Gorenjska and Štajerska. Surrounded by the mountains, the town took rise below the southern slopes of the Kamnik Savinja Alps, whose highest peak is Grintovec (2558m).
In the Middle Ages, Kamnik was a flourishing trading town with its own mint and it was home to several European aristocratic families, such as Counts of Andechs from Bavaria (Germany). The town's wonderful architecture and sacral heritage, as well as the numerous myths and legend are a testament to its prosperous days. The most famous legend tells about the enchanted countess Veronika, half-human and half-snake, the guardian of the hidden treasure of Mali grad (Small Castle). Kamnik is protected by Stari and Mali grad (''Old and Small Castle'') on the surrounding rocky hills, and the church of St. Primus, famous for its fascinating Renaissance frescoes, on the slope of the nearby Velika planina.

The most beautiful part of the town is certanly the old historical center with the characteristic narrow streets, adorned with medieval and Baroque houses. Nearby there is a Golf course.
