This area includes the villages which lie northwest of Bled towards Pokljuka. The road forks in Spodnje Gorje - one turn leads to the well-known Vintgar gorge or through Poljane towards Jesenice, whilst the other turn leads to Zgornje Gorje and further towards Pokljuka plateau. Zgornje Gorje, a densely settled village at the top of a gently sloping ridge, is the central settlement with the parish Church of St. George (sv. Jurij). Not far away, near the small village of Krnica, lies the interesting Pokljuška ravine, also known as Pokljuška Luknja (Pokljuka Hole). From Krnica a narrow Radovna valley leads to the foothills of Slovenia's highest mountain Triglav. The valley is full of meadows wherw cows still grasp today. Gorje's good sunny location invited people to settle here in the ancient past - evidence of which is provided by finds in the Poljšica or Poglejska Cerkev - as the natives call one of the two Karst caves behind the village of Poljšica - these date from late Paleolithic and Mesolithic times. Several Old Slavic gravesites have been found in Spodnje Gorje. The symbol of Gorje is a bell, because in old times the craft of bell-making flourished in these places, and the production of cow bells is now being revived. Blacksmiths, workshops, sawmills and cheese factories are also worth visiting.
